What does it mean that Jesus is the Alpha and Omega?

Alpha and Omega appears three times in the bible and in each instance, Jesus applied the appellation to himself. In the book of Revelation, Jesus said this: "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty"- Revelation 1; 8

Revelation 21: 6

"Then He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost".

Revelation 22: 13

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. A Christian author wrote this, "Among the Jewish rabbis, it was common to use the first and the last letters of the Hebrew alphabet to denote the whole of anything, from beginning to end".

When Jesus says, He is the Alpha and Omega, it means that He is the beginning and the culmination of all things. He was in the beginning of creation, for creation itself has its origin from him (John 1; 1-3) and will be there at the destruction of the current heavens and earth in the end, see (2 Peter 3, 10-12).

Jesus was present in the beginning of the book of Genesis, which says: In the beginning God (Elohim) and Elohim is in the plural form which speaks of the trinity. He is also at the end of the book of Revelation: He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming quickly." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus (Revelation 22; 20).

Jesus is also the author, and the finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12; 2). He is also the source of our eternal salvation, He has begun a good work in us and He will carry it unto completion, see (Philippians 1; 6).

All this and more emphasizes his eternal nature as God, and divine sovereignty over all creation, for it is only God who can be described in such language.

In Revelation 22; 13, Jesus calls himself, "the first and the last", it is the same words, God applied to himself in the old testament:

"Who has performed and accomplished it, Calling forth the generations from the beginning? 'I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. I am He.'" (Isaiah 41; 4).

Isaiah 44:6

"Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: 'I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.

Jesus by calling himself, "the first and the last", He was simply equating himself with the God of the old testament.

Brethren, this is an encouragement for us, because the one who is, and who was, and is to come is God, and He alone knows our beginning and our end. We can rely safely on Him, because we know He is in charge of our lives, and controls the helm of affairs. God bless you

A thought to ponder 🤔

Jesus by calling himself, "the first and the last", He was simply equating himself with the God of the old testament

We defend and exposit the truth of the gospel
